Orlando Pirates Held to Goalless Draw by Sekhukhune United in Betway Premiership

Orlando Pirates were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, leaving their Betway Premiership title ambitions slightly stalled. The Soweto giants dominated possession and created multiple opportunities but were repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined and organised Sekhukhune defence. Both teams remain level on 29 points, with Mamelodi Sundowns holding top spot on goal difference.

Pirates registered 17 attempts at goal, five on target, compared to Sekhukhune United’s six shots with just one on target. Despite the statistical dominance, Orlando Pirates were unable to convert their chances, with home goalkeeper and defenders making crucial interventions throughout the match. The result reflects Sekhukhune United’s resolute defensive strategy, which successfully nullified the Soweto side’s attacking threats.

Speaking after the match, club captain Nkosinathi Sibisi described the draw as part of the day’s natural outcome. He highlighted the energy from the fans and the team’s efforts on the pitch. “It’s the first game of the year, and it feels good to be back, to be playing in front of this crowd,” Sibisi said. “The people came out in their numbers, and I think they deserved a show, and the boys didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately for us today, it was not meant to be.”

Sibisi further explained the team’s frustration, noting that despite creating numerous opportunities, the goal remained elusive. “We tried everything, everything. We could have played another 90 minutes, but we still would have gone home with no goals,” he added. His comments reflected both the team’s commitment and the difficulty of breaking down Sekhukhune United’s compact defence.

Looking ahead, Orlando Pirates have the chance to reclaim momentum when they face Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Sunday. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns will look to extend their advantage at the top of the table as they host Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening. The outcome of these matches will be crucial in shaping the early title race for the 2025-26 Betway Premiership season.
