Edward Motale Calls for Support Around Relebohile Mofokeng Amid Overseas Move Delay

Former Orlando Pirates captain Edward Motale has urged those close to young midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng to provide guidance and support as he navigates the disappointment of not yet securing an overseas move. Despite links to clubs abroad, Mofokeng remains at Pirates, while teammates Mohau Nkota and Mbekezeli Mbokazi have already moved overseas. Speaking to Soccer Laduma at the launch of the Legends Soweto Derby at Ellis Park Stadium on Monday, Motale stressed the importance of mental and emotional support for the 21-year-old.

“Football is so funny. That is why that coach said football can kill you, real death, you understand. If I was his parent or agent, I’d sit the boy down and say, ‘Look, that’s football. Football comes and goes. We play for Pirates, and people enjoy our play,’” Motale said. The former defender highlighted the need for patience and hard work, noting that timing and circumstances often determine a player’s opportunity abroad. Motale urged Mofokeng to remain calm and focused, reminding him that his career is still young and opportunities will arise.

“So, what I’m trying to say is, these young boys, we all know Rele was far better than Mohau Nkota, but Nkota is gone. That’s because of certain qualities and luck. Rele must calm down. Work hard, you still have more years to go abroad. Do not give up,” Motale explained. Motale also emphasized that Mofokeng must be made mentally strong to cope with the pressures of professional football. “Somebody must make him mentally strong. Whether it’s parents or the agent, they must just make him strong. Otherwise, we risk losing the boy, mentally and physically,” he added.

The advice from Motale underscores the challenges young talents face when expectations clash with reality. With the right support and mindset, Mofokeng can continue his development at Pirates while preparing for potential overseas opportunities in the future.
