A Massive Win Over Chiefs At Orlando Stadium For The Brazilians
The journey for the title defence got a major boost at Orlando Stadium tonight as Mamelodi Sundowns beat log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by a goal to zero. The win makes Masandawana level on points with the log leaders on fifty-three points each with only the goal difference separating them. This was the second win in a row after beating Golden Arrows on Monday.
Both sides had a lot at stake and the Brazilians were the first ones to stamp authority in the game as they made some good passes to penetrate the home side’s defence, but the first shot which was taken by Hlompho Kekana did not worry Daniel Akpeyi. Amakhosi also stepped up and a mistake by Kennedy Mweene at the back almost allowed them a goal, fortunately a clearance by Mosa Lebusa made sure the score stayed at 0-0.
Lyle Lakay had the wall beaten and his free-kick was goal bound but Akpeyi pulled a fingertip save. The game opened up and it was end to end action, however the goals were not materializing. It took Masandawana thirty-four minutes to find the back of the net as a great backheel pass by Themba Zwane found Gaston Sirino well positioned behind the Chiefs defence. the Uruguayan made a perfect finish to break the deadlock. With the game going into half-time, Sirino had a great chance to extend the lead but Akpeyi was alert and came out to block the attack.
Kaizer Chiefs started the second half with high tempo and Bernard Parker had his eye at goal when he took a shot outside the box, Mweene was alert to tip the ball over the bar. The home side was throwing everything at Masandawana and substitute Dumisani Zuma had his shot blocked by Khama Billiat inside the box. Coach Pitso Mosimane brought on Andile Jali and Lebo Maboe to add stability in a place off Zwane and Sirino.
Maboe had a glorious chance to stretch the lead as he manoeuvred his way past the Chiefs’ defence only to see his shot hitting the woodwork with Akpeyi well beaten. The Brazilians withstood what was thrown at them by Chiefs and managed to seal a win away from home, making sure that the night ended with the maximum points.
