Ajax Cape Town Confirms Interest In McCarthy! With rumors doing rounds that Ajax Cape Town is eyeing services of Benni McCarthy, Ajax’s executive chairman Ari Efstathiou confirmed the rumors that Cape Town based-club has been engaging with the Bafana Bafana top goal scorer on numerous occasions with a view to give him an opportunity.
Efstathiou said he has been in touch with former Cape Town City coach, after ex-Ajax head coach Andries Ulderink resigned in sympathy to suspended goalkeeper-coach Hans Vonk in late January.
“At the time that we got the resignation from Andries Ulderink we were sitting with about a two-point lead with 11 games to go, and since then we have been looking for a coach to replace Ulderink and also someone with a vision to keep the momentum going as we eyeing to win the GladAfrica Championship,” Efstathiou said.
“All we looking for is only the best for the team, we strongly believe that Benni will come with his stellar management skills and change not necessarily much of what we are doing,” he added.
However, Efstathiou, said the Bafana Bafana legend ultimately had intentions to continue his coaching career in Europe, but he vowed to consider the offer on table and he was very keen to join the Warriors.
During his tenure as Cape Town City head coach, the former FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers striker led Cape Town City when he honoured Ajax rivals by winning the MTN8 cup in 2018 after finishing fifth in the Absa Premiership in 2017-18‚ however, Benni was sacked in 2019 after falling out with the club.s chairman Michel Comitis.
The Urban Warriors are bitter rivals to Cape Town City – owned by John Comitis‚ whose brother-in-law Efstathiou ousted as chairman of Ajax in a family power feud in 2013.
Currently, the Urban Warriors are on top of the GladAfrica log with 48 points in 24 games played so far. They are much anticipated and focused on gaining promotion to the Premier Soccer League next season.
