Al Ahly and Bayern Munich are two of the biggest clubs in their respective continents. They both won trebles in 2020.

Trebles that included continental success, which is what brings them at this juncture.

Pitso Mosimane and Hans-Dieter Flick

Both coaches arrived at their respective clubs in the middle of their respective seasons.

Hans-Dieter Flick replaced Niko Kovac at Bayern Munich last season. He introduced a high defensive line which saw the team play all their football in opposition halves.

Flick absolutely reinvigorated a lethargic Bayern Munich side. They ended up scoring the most goals in Europe and winning a treble.

Pitso Mosimane had a remarkable 2020. He steered Mamelodi Sundowns to a domestic treble in 2020. This included the Telkom Knockout, Nedbank Cup and ABSA Premiership.

Soon after this, he was appointed as the Al Ahly head coach. Within the space of two months Mosimane delivered the treble for Al Ahly.

Continental Champions Leagues

Coincidentally, the last time both these sides won their respective Champions Leagues was in 2013 before their new head coaches arrived.

For Bayern Munich this was when they defeated fellow German side Borussia Dortmund in Wembley. This was their last UEFA Champions League title back in 2013 before Flick’s success in 2020.

AL Ahly also last won the CAF Champions League back in 2013 before Pitso Mosimane arrived. They defeated South African side Orlando Pirates in Alexandria.

2x Trebles

Both sides are proud to have completed two trebles in their club history.

Bayern Munich’s first treble was in 2013 when they last won the UEFA Champions League before Flick’s arrival. 2020 saw the Germans emulate that feat once again.

Al Ahly’s first treble was completed back in 2005. Pitso Mosimane orchestrated their second treble in 2020 after two months in charge.
