Antoine Griezmann along with fellow French and Barcelona teammate Ousmane Dembele mocked and made fun of staff in a Japanese hotel in 2019.
The video has since resurfaced and made viral news. As a result of this, Japanese company Konami has terminated their contract with Griezmann.
“Konami Digital Entertainment believes, as is the philosophy of sports, that discrimination of any kind is unacceptable.” The company said in a statement.
“Previously we had announced Antoine Griezmann as our Yu-Gi-Oh! contents ambassador; however, in light of recent events we have decided to cancel the contract.”
Barcelona also condemned the actions of Griezmann and Dembele.
“FC Barcelona deeply regret the displeasure amongst Japanese and Asian fans and partners of our Club caused by a video that appeared a few days ago on social media in which two first team players (Ousmane Dembélé and Antoine Griezmann) displayed a lack of respect in their attitude towards several employees in the hotel in which they were staying” they said in a statement.
This is not the first incident of this nature which Griezmann is involved in. In 2017, while still an Atletico Madrid player, Griezmann offended many people with a blackface costume.
He dressed up as a Harlem Globetrotters player and tweeted “80’s party”, dressed in basketball attire accompanied by blackface.
“Calm down guys, I’m a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters and their good old days… it’s a tribute,” he apologised shortly afterwards.
“I recognise it is clumsy on my part. If I have hurt anyone, I apologise.” He also added.
Griezmann deleted that tweet almost immediately. Antoine Griezmann Loses Sponsorship Deal After Apparent Racist Remarks!
