Arendse Confident Lucas Ribeiro Can Fill the Void Left by Mshishi at Sundowns

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain, Wayne Arendse, has expressed confidence that Lucas Ribeiro Costa is more than capable of stepping up in the absence of Themba “Mshishi” Zwane, who is sidelined with an Achilles injury.

Zwane, who is affectionately known as Mshishi, sustained the injury during Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw against Congo-Brazzaville in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last month. The 35-year-old playmaker has been a pivotal figure for Sundowns, but with his injury keeping him out of action, Arendse believes Ribeiro has proven his ability to fill the gap left by his long-time teammate.

“Lucas Ribeiro is something else. From day one, he has been performing well on that Sundowns team, showing his quality,” Arendse shared with FARPost. “I think he has filled Themba Zwane’s role very well after that long-term injury. He’s making those runs and helping the midfield click. He has stepped up his performance, and now he’s the main man making the team play well. Up front, he has continued with his scoring form, which is good to witness.”

Ribeiro, who has been a standout performer for Sundowns this season, has made an immediate impact since joining the team. The 26-year-old midfielder has scored seven goals and provided two assists in 12 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his all-around skill set.

Zwane’s absence has been felt both by Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, though Hugo Broos’ side managed a victory over Uganda without the veteran midfielder. Zwane’s return to action is expected around February 2025, but for now, Sundowns will continue to rely on Ribeiro, who is thriving in the role.

The absence of Mshishi will not stop Sundowns from targeting more silverware, as Ribeiro’s contributions are already being felt. Sundowns will look to Ribeiro to help them secure the Carling Knockout title in their upcoming final against Magesi FC at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein this Saturday.

With the spotlight now on Ribeiro, Sundowns fans will be hoping the Brazilian can continue his fine form and keep the team on track while Mshishi makes his recovery.
