Ashley Cupido Receives Late Call-Up to Bafana Bafana Ahead of Rwanda Clash

Stellenbosch striker Ashley Cupido has been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of South Africa’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda. The match kicks off at 18:00 on Tuesday at Mbombela Stadium.

Stellenbosch FC confirmed on Monday night that Cupido has received a late call-up from national team coach Hugo Broos. The club did not specify who he is replacing, but reports suggest he is stepping in for Burnley forward Lyle Foster, who was seen limping following South Africa’s 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe last Friday at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Foster’s fitness for the upcoming match remains uncertain.

“Stellenbosch FC striker Ashley Cupido has received a late call-up to the South Africa squad ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier against Rwanda after being selected as an injury replacement by coach Hugo Broos,” the club’s statement read.

Cupido last featured for Bafana Bafana on 10 June 2025, when he scored his maiden international goal in a 2-0 friendly win over Mozambique. The 24-year-old has earned six senior caps and previously represented South Africa at the 2024 COSAFA Cup held in Gqeberha.

He joins the squad as Bafana Bafana currently sit second in Group C. A victory against Rwanda is crucial to secure automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup.

As of now, neither Broos nor SAFA has officially confirmed Cupido’s arrival at the national team camp or provided details on which player he will replace. The late inclusion adds depth to the squad ahead of a high-stakes encounter that could determine South Africa’s World Cup hopes.
