New head coach Hugo Broos could not take charge of his first Bafana Bafana match as yet. Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele took charge of the match on his own.
Assistant coach Janevski Cedomir tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday (8 June 2021), which also ruled him out of the game.
“We continue to check for clinical symptoms and encourage the staff to wear masks without failure, practice social distance and everyone is accommodated separately,’’ team doctor Tshepo Molobi said.
Bafana Bafana fielded an extremely youthful first XI for this match. Including the bench as well, the team had 3 players born in 2000 or after.
Nkosinathi Sibisi, Sibusiso Mabiliso, Craig Martin, Denwin Farmer, Ethan Brooks, Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Evidence Makgopa all made their Bafana Bafana debuts.
It was Uganda who took the first half lead through Ibrahim Orit. He scored a header in the 15th minute of the game.
The Ugandans could have made it 2-0 in the first half, but Emmanuel Okwi failed to capitalise on an opportunity soon after.
The South Africans failed to create any meaningful opportunities in the first half. This led to the half-time introduction of strikers Thabiso Kutumela and Evidence Makgopa.
The latter, Evidence Makgopa, scored the equaliser for Bafana soon after his introduction. Another young man Bongokuhle Hlongwane completed the turnaround for Bafana Bafana.
Makgopa double his tally and opened up a two goal lead as Bafana led 3-1 at the Orlando Stadium.
Abdul Lumala narrowed the scores to 3-2 late into the game. This is where the goals ended as the new-look Bafana Bafana defeated Uganda 3-2 at the Orlando Stadium.
