Bafana Bafana Unveils 25-Man Squad for Africa Cup of Nations with Surprising Picks Included

South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, has confirmed its 25-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, set to kick off later this month. Head coach Hugo Broos made several unexpected decisions, generating discussion across the local football community.

The squad announcement, made in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, saw the exclusion of Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane, who recently returned to action after an injury layoff since September. Despite his recovery and weekend minutes on the pitch, Zwane did not make the final cut, signaling Broos’ focus on current form and team balance.

As expected, the squad is heavily composed of players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, reflecting the influence of both clubs in South African football. Broos will rely on these players to provide leadership and experience as Bafana aims to progress in the tournament.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster earns a spot in the squad, returning after missing the previous AFCON due to mental health concerns. His inclusion adds pace and attacking options up front. Newcomers Shandre Campbell and Tylon Smith also feature, marking their first call-ups to the national team.

CAF regulations allow national teams to name up to four additional players beyond the standard 23, providing coverage for potential injuries. Broos has included two extra players in his 25-man squad under this provision. SAFA has confirmed that Mduduzi Shabalala, Iqraam Rayners, and Thabo Moloisane remain on standby.

Bafana Bafana is drawn in Group B alongside Angola, Zimbabwe, and Egypt. The team will open its campaign against Angola on December 22.
