Benedict Vilakazi Declares Himself ‘Far Better’ Than Relebohile Mofokeng

Former Orlando Pirates captain Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has sparked debate by claiming that his footballing abilities at 20 were superior to those of current Pirates midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng. Vilakazi, who captained both Orlando Pirates and South Africa’s U20 and U23 teams, pointed to his leadership roles and on-field performances as proof that he was the better player at the same age.
In contrast, former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye offered a different perspective, arguing that comparing players across generations is difficult due to the changing competitive landscape. While acknowledging Mofokeng’s talent, Khanye stated that today’s football environment is different, making direct comparisons unfair.
Relebohile Mofokeng, born on October 23, 2004, in Sharpeville, South Africa, has quickly risen through the ranks. After progressing through the Transnet School of Excellence and Orlando Pirates’ youth system, he made his senior debut for Pirates in May 2023. Since then, he has made 39 appearances and scored 14 goals for the club. On the international stage, he has represented South Africa’s U20 team and earned his senior debut in June 2024, collecting six caps and scoring once.
Mofokeng’s recent performances have put him in the spotlight. He scored twice against Mamelodi Sundowns in a crucial 2-1 victory for Orlando Pirates and also found the net in a 2-0 win over Lesotho during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His consistent displays have fueled discussions about his potential, with some even comparing him to young stars on the global stage.
As debates continue over how Mofokeng compares to past and present players, the young midfielder remains focused on his club and international duties. His upcoming fixtures include a CAF Champions League quarter-final clash against MC Alger on April 1, 2025, followed by a Premier Soccer League match against Polokwane City FC on April 6, 2025.
Fans and analysts will be closely watching Mofokeng’s performances in these key matches as he looks to solidify his growing reputation in South African football.
