Benni McCarthy Begins New Chapter as Kenya Head Coach with Trusted Team

Benni McCarthy has officially been unveiled as the new head coach of the Kenya national football team, marking a fresh start for the Harambee Stars. The former Bafana Bafana striker has brought along a familiar technical team from South Africa, signaling a new era for Kenyan football.
McCarthy’s Arrival in Kenya
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed on Monday that McCarthy and his coaching staff have signed two-year contracts, with the goal of revitalizing the national team and guiding them through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
McCarthy will be assisted by Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs, who takes up the role of goalkeeping coach, Vasili Manousakis as assistant coach, and Pilela Maposa as the team’s performance analyst. The quartet previously worked together at AmaZulu FC, where they helped the club reach the CAF Champions League group stage in the 2021/22 season.
FKF’s Statement on McCarthy’s Appointment
The FKF expressed confidence in McCarthy’s ability to lead Kenya forward, emphasizing his experience and commitment to football development.
“After a rigorous selection process, we are confident that Benni McCarthy is the right person to lead our national team forward. His experience, vision, and commitment to developing Kenyan football align perfectly with our ambitions,” read part of FKF’s statement.
“This team brings a wealth of expertise, and we believe they will instil tactical discipline, structure, and a winning mentality as we prepare for upcoming competitions.”
McCarthy’s First Task with Kenya
The South African tactician takes charge at a crucial time, with Kenya set to face Gambia and Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His first match will be an away fixture against Gambia, followed by a home game against Gabon six days later.
McCarthy replaces Turkish coach Engin Fırat, who stepped down after failing to guide Kenya to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco. Now, the former Manchester United striker coach has a chance to make an impact by leading the Harambee Stars to their first-ever World Cup appearance.
Kenyan football fans will be eager to see how McCarthy and his trusted lieutenants transform the national team’s fortunes in the coming months.
