Betway Premiership Title Race Heats Up Between Sundowns and Pirates

The 2024/25 Betway Premiership season has been a thrilling contest, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates emerging as the primary contenders for the title. Currently, Sundowns hold a nine-point lead over Pirates following a commanding 4-1 victory at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on February 8.
Sundowns’ Dominance
That decisive win not only extended Sundowns’ lead but also underscored their determination to retain the championship. Despite this advantage, the Buccaneers remain undeterred under the guidance of head coach Jose Riveiro. Having secured five cup titles in two years, including three consecutive MTN8 trophies, Riveiro has instilled a winning mentality within his squad. However, the league title remains elusive.
Vilakazi Weighs In on the Title Race
Former Pirates and Sundowns midfielder Benedict Vilakazi believes the championship battle is far from over. Known in football circles as “Tso,” Vilakazi has emphasized the competitive nature of the league, suggesting that the title could be decided in the final matches of the season.
Key Fixtures Ahead
Looking ahead, both teams have crucial fixtures that could influence the title race. Pirates have two games in hand, presenting a chance to narrow the gap. Their upcoming midweek fixture against Golden Arrows in Hammarsdale is pivotal, while Sundowns will face Marumo Gallants at the Dr. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. The results of these matches could significantly impact the standings and shape the remainder of the season.
A Fierce Battle for Supremacy
As the season progresses, fans can expect an intense fight for the title. Vilakazi remains optimistic that the race will go down to the wire.
“When it comes to our football in the country right now, you can never say it’s over when it is not yet over. As the idiom says, it isn’t over until the fat lady sings, and I see the title race going to the end of the season. If Pirates continue their strong performances, this title race could go until the very last match,” said Vilakazi.
Sundowns’ Form Compared to Last Season
Vilakazi also highlighted a notable difference between Sundowns’ performance this season and last year.
“Against TS Galaxy, Sundowns dropped points at a crucial moment when they were not supposed to. Last season, around this time, Rulani Mokwena’s team was already out of reach, but this time it’s a different scenario. This season’s league race is much closer, and it’s something we should acknowledge,” he added.
With crucial matches still to be played, the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season remains unpredictable, setting the stage for an enthralling climax.
