Brandon Petersen Confident Kaizer Chiefs Can End Season on a High After Nedbank Cup Glory

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen believes the club is on the verge of a strong finish to the 2024/25 campaign after lifting the Nedbank Cup and ending their long-standing trophy drought. The 30-year-old shot-stopper played a crucial role in the final on May 10, helping Amakhosi secure a 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Orlando Pirates.

The Nedbank Cup triumph was a significant milestone for the Soweto giants, who had endured nearly a decade without silverware. Chiefs’ win not only marked a return to winning ways in domestic cup competitions but also injected renewed belief into the squad, fans, and technical team as the season nears its end.

While Kaizer Chiefs have struggled for consistency in the DStv Premiership this season and currently sit ninth on the table with 30 points — level with eighth-placed Chippa United — Petersen remains optimistic that the team can finish within the MTN8 qualification bracket. Chiefs still have two matches left to play against Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City, both of which will be critical in determining their final league position.

Speaking after the Nedbank Cup final, Petersen described the remaining fixtures as “two cup finals” and expressed the team’s ambition to finish the season with momentum.

“A 100 percent and I think we have two cup finals left,” said Petersen. “We want to finish this season on a high. We want to end in the top eight so we have more trophies, more silverware to play for next season. We’ll celebrate tonight and then tomorrow it’s back to work for those two cup finals.”

Reflecting on the emotional journey and the significance of the Nedbank Cup victory, Petersen credited faith and perseverance as key drivers behind the team’s success.

“I think if something is set out for you to achieve it, if Jesus says yes, no one can say no,” he said. “Every week we go out, we try and perform, and it doesn’t always go our way. But the history that’s behind this win made it even more special for us. It made us want to really achieve it.”

The Glamour Boys faced significant pressure going into the final, having failed to progress beyond the Carling Knockout quarter-finals earlier in the season. But their resilience paid off when it mattered most. The Nedbank Cup was the last remaining chance for Chiefs to win a trophy this season — and they seized the opportunity in style.

“This was the last trophy up for grabs, and I think that alone was the encouragement we needed to bring back the glory days,” Petersen concluded.

Petersen’s performance in the final and his leadership at the back have seemingly cemented his place as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, edging out Bruce Bvuma in recent selections. As Chiefs push to secure a top-eight finish, the form and focus of their keeper could prove decisive.

Kaizer Chiefs now look ahead to their final two fixtures with renewed purpose. With the Nedbank Cup already in hand, finishing strong in the league would be the perfect way to build toward a more successful 2025/26 campaign.
