Brandon Petersen on the Verge of Bafana Bafana Call-Up After Stellar Run at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has continued his impressive form this season, putting himself in the conversation for a call-up to Bafana Bafana ahead of the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Petersen’s performances at the back have given him ample reason to aim for national team recognition.

The 31-year-old has been a rock for Chiefs, recording seven clean sheets in the first 10 league matches. This level of consistency highlights just how integral he has become to the club’s defensive setup. His form has coincided with the latest FIFA international dates, giving his name further weight in national team discussions.

Petersen has now played 11 consecutive league games for the first time since joining Chiefs, demonstrating both fitness and resilience. This milestone comes during his fifth season at the club. His previous longest streak was 10 games in a row during the 2022/23 season, when he reclaimed the starting position at the end of January 2023. That run lasted three months until disciplinary issues, accumulating four yellow cards, forced him out temporarily.

The seven clean sheets he has recorded this season put him just one away from matching his personal best of eight clean sheets in a league campaign, achieved in 16 games during 2022/23. Last season, he managed only one clean sheet in four league appearances, underlining the marked improvement in his current form.

Much of Petersen’s recent success has been attributed to goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi, who has worked closely with the shot-stopper to refine his positioning, reflexes, and mental sharpness. The pair’s partnership has clearly paid dividends, with Petersen now enjoying a stretch of 13 league matches in a row when including the previous season.

With Chiefs relying on him week in and week out, Petersen’s consistent performances and growing experience make him a strong contender for the Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON finals. His continued form at Lena Road Naturena suggests he could be ready to make an impact at the continental level, further enhancing his reputation as one of South Africa’s top goalkeepers.
