Hugo Broos Confirms Mbekezeli Mbokazi in AFCON Squad and Offers Career Advice

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that 20-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi will be part of South Africa’s final squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The young defender has quickly established himself as a key figure for the national team, contributing significantly during the final FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mbokazi’s rise mirrors his recent impact at club level. Earlier this year, he stepped up in the absence of senior players, quickly becoming a commanding presence in defence. He now captains his club team whenever Nkosinathi Sibisi is not on the pitch.

Speaking at a round table discussion at SAFA House, Broos revealed plans to discuss Mbokazi’s career during the AFCON camp in Morocco. “I will talk to him certainly when we are in AFCON. I will have the time, and I will share my experience with him. I hope that he listens. I think he will listen because he is a very humble guy. But when you are in an environment that can make you crazy, a guy of 20 will be crazy also. This is something that I will certainly do,” Broos said.

The Belgian coach has consistently recommended that Mbokazi consider a move abroad to further his development. He reiterated this advice, emphasizing the importance of good guidance. “I pray to God that Mbokazi is surrounded by people who think, otherwise he could choose the wrong thing. The most important thing is that young players choose the right,” Broos explained.

AFCON presents a crucial platform for Mbokazi to display his talent on a continental stage. Many African players have used the tournament to secure moves to top leagues abroad, and a strong performance could open similar opportunities for the young defender.

As Bafana Bafana prepare for the tournament, Mbokazi’s inclusion signals both trust in his abilities and a chance for him to take the next step in his career under the guidance of an experienced mentor.
