Cape Town City FC Mpho Makola Banned For 6 Months
Cape Town City FC woes this season seem to never end as they continue encountering a season of mixed fortunes both on and off the pitch.
After showing coach Benni McCarthy the exit door and ushering a new era spearheaded by Dutchman Jan Olde Riekerink, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee compounded their misery by banning midfielder Mpho Makola for 6 months, for a push on referee Abongile Tom during a Telkom Knockout last 16 match against Kaizer Chiefs.
The former Orlando Pirates man clearly pushed Tom in clear remonstration and dissent at an official decision but surprisingly Makola did not receive his marching orders.
The incident occurred during at the Cape Town Stadium in an encounter played on the 19th of October after the referee had awarded Amakhosi a penalty for an alleged hand ball offence.
The Premier Soccer League revealed the decision on Friday morning stating that the player was found guilty for assaulting the match official and bringing the game the league into disrepute.
The PSL tweeted:
“The #PSL Disciplinary Committee has handed a six months ban to @CapeTownCityFC player‚ Mpho Makola. Makola was found guilty of assaulting match official‚ Abongile Tom during the Telkom Knockout fixture against @KaizerChiefs at Cape Town Stadium on 19 October 2019.”
The Disciplinary Committee decision effectively means Makola’s season is over as he will only be able to return to action Mid-May of which by then most of the league action would have been rounded up.
Cape Town City however are most likely going to appeal the length of the ban.
