Cardoso Reveals How Players Used To Come To Training Drunk At Chiefs!
Daniel Cardoso has revealed how players used to report to training under the influence of alcohol at Kaizer Chiefs. Cardoso was one of the nine players that were released by Chiefs last of last week as they look to rebuild their squad. Their contracts were going to run out at the end of June but the club decided against extending their stay.
Cardoso was speaking at the Marawa Sports Worldwide where he revealed that Amakhosi’s signing strategy isn’t proper and how some of their players don’t care about representing the badge.
“I think the biggest downfall over the past seven years I was there… I have seen players brought in and let go within six months to a year [because they were not the right fit],” Cardoso told Marawa Sports Worldwide.
“Sometimes the quality of signings that come to Chiefs… you bring in players from the NFD (National First Division), you bring in free agents. I mean, they are passionate about playing but some players just want to earn a salary.
“And you can see it on the field. You can see who wants to play and how some players just arrive at training reeking of alcohol because they don’t care. I believe that was the biggest effect [problem] we had at Chiefs in the years that I was there.”
The former Free State Stars player also stated that the Glamour Boys can succeed if they were to change their recruitment policy and bring in quality players at the club.
“But I think the biggest impact is the signings, in terms of the downfall. I do hope that they fix it. They have the finances [for that] and they can become a great force. And I hope they do,” he said.
“It’s been seven years without a trophy and I hope it doesn’t carry on longer because the fans are getting impatient. If you go to the shops after a loss, you have to put your hat on and thank goodness for the facemasks.”
The 33-year old defender is still a free agent and will be seeking a new home ahead of the upcoming 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
Cardoso joined Chiefs in 2015 and he played 202 matches and scored 13 goals across competitions.
Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole, Lebogang Manyama, Leonardo Castro, Daniel Akpeyi, Kearyn Baccus, Bernard Parker and Dumisani Zuma are other players who won’t be wearing the famous Gold and Black jersey in the next campaign.
