Cassius Mailula Bids Emotional Farewell to Wydad AC After FIFA Club World Cup Campaign

South African forward Cassius Mailula has confirmed his departure from Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club following their disappointing run at the ongoing expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Mailula featured prominently for Wydad during the tournament, starting two of their three Group G matches and making one appearance from the bench. The 24-year-old managed to find the back of the net once, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to prevent Wydad from crashing out after three straight defeats and finishing without a point.

The talented attacker had joined Wydad Casablanca on loan from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, alongside fellow South African Thembinkosi Lorch, who arrived temporarily from Mamelodi Sundowns. Both players were brought in by former Wydad coach Rhulani Mokwena, whose stint with the Moroccan club ended prematurely following struggles in domestic competitions.

In his time at Wydad, Mailula made 36 appearances across all competitions, contributing six goals and seven assists. Despite these efforts, the club’s collective challenges meant a difficult season both in Morocco and on the international stage.

Taking to social media, Mailula shared an emotional farewell message to the Wydad family. “Dear Wydad family, it is with a heavy heart that I write this message, as I want to let you all know that I will not be continuing with the team for the upcoming season,” he said.

“My time with Wydad has been an incredibly special and rewarding experience, and I will forever be grateful for it. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. From the security staff to the technical team, to my teammates, your kindness and support have meant the world to me.”

Mailula went on to thank the club president and Rhulani Mokwena for believing in him. “Without his trust, I wouldn’t be the player I am today. I wish the club, the fans, and everyone involved nothing but continued success in the upcoming season and beyond. Dima Wydad.”

Mailula’s next destination remains unclear. Having struggled for regular game time at Toronto FC before his Moroccan loan spell, the Bafana Bafana international now faces a career crossroads. It remains to be seen whether he will return to MLS or secure a new challenge elsewhere.

With his attacking quality and international experience, Mailula is sure to attract interest from clubs both in Africa and abroad. Fans will watch closely to see where his next chapter unfolds.
