Referee Victor Gomes became the first ever South African to take charge of an AFCON final encounter. His sublime performance saw him gain rave reviews last night.
Gomes impressed many by the manner in which he dealt with the many egos that were on the Olembe football pitch. He was able to calm down some of the biggest superstars in world football.
The PSL and SAFA referee shook the world of football when he offered Mohamed Salah his referee whistle and cards, asking the Liverpool superstar to take charge of the rest of the game. This is after the forward questioned one of the decisions made by Gomes.
After such an impressive performance, Gomes will now look to be selected to be in this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He would become the first referee to achieve this feat since Jerome Damon and his team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.
