Chiefs Legend Blames Fatigue for Bucs Stars’ Poor Final Showing as Pirates Face New Chapter

Kaizer Chiefs icon Doctor Khumalo has weighed in on Orlando Pirates’ disappointing performance in the Nedbank Cup final, pointing to player fatigue and underperformance from key stars as major factors in the Buccaneers’ defeat to their Soweto rivals.
The Amakhosi ended their trophy drought in dramatic fashion, clinching victory at a packed stadium that saw emotions run high on both sides. While Khumalo praised his former team for their grit and determination, he didn’t hold back in analysing what went wrong for the Bucs.
Khumalo Questions Impact of Mofokeng and Maswanganyi
The legendary former midfielder specifically called out two of Pirates’ rising stars, Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Maswanganyi, for failing to deliver on the big stage. Despite being pivotal figures throughout the season, both players fell short of expectations in the final, according to Khumalo.
“Players like Mofokeng and Maswanganyi were expected to make the difference, but they didn’t show up when it mattered most,” Khumalo told iDiski Times. “The occasion may have been too big, or perhaps it’s the fatigue catching up with them.”
Indeed, the two players have featured heavily for Pirates across all competitions, with some members of the squad reportedly playing in nearly 99% of the team’s matches this season. Coupled with international commitments for Bafana Bafana, the relentless schedule may have taken a toll.
Praise for Hotto and Kimvuidi
While critical of some, Khumalo did highlight bright spots for the Buccaneers. He praised Deon Hotto for his work rate and attacking intent, and was particularly impressed by Karim Kimvuidi’s impact off the bench.
“Kimvuidi brought energy and creativity. You could see he was hungry to prove a point,” Khumalo said. “He was one of the few who looked capable of turning the game around.”
Kimvuidi, who has struggled for regular game time this season, could now see more opportunities open up as the club undergoes a transition in leadership.
Riveiro’s Departure Signals New Direction
Pirates are preparing for an emotional farewell this week as head coach Jose Riveiro takes charge of his final match against Golden Arrows on Tuesday night. The Spaniard is leaving the club six weeks before the expiry of his contract after agreeing terms with Al Ahly.
Riveiro’s early exit marks the end of a successful chapter at the club, with titles and continental progress highlighting his tenure. Assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi will step in as interim manager, ushering in what could be a transformative period for the Soweto giants.
New Era, New Opportunities
Ncikazi’s promotion could breathe new life into the squad, offering underutilised talents like Kimvuidi a chance to play a bigger role. With the team facing a heavy fixture load and some key players showing signs of fatigue, a refreshed tactical approach may be just what the Buccaneers need.
As Pirates close out the season and prepare for life without Riveiro, all attention turns to how they’ll finish under his guidance and what Ncikazi can bring as a potential long-term successor.
Emotional Send-Off Expected
Tuesday’s clash at Orlando Stadium will be more than just another league fixture. For the players, staff, and fans, it will be a chance to honour a coach who restored pride and consistency to the club. A win would not only be a fitting tribute to Riveiro but also provide a much-needed morale boost ahead of what promises to be a defining off-season.
With fresh questions around player fatigue, squad depth, and leadership, the spotlight now turns to the Buccaneers to see how they navigate this new chapter.
