Chippa United Part Ways with Coach Thabo September After Missing Top Eight Finish

Following earlier reports that a Premier Soccer League (PSL) coach was on the verge of departure, new and revealing information has now confirmed that Chippa United have officially decided not to retain head coach Thabo September. The decision comes after the team failed to meet its goal of finishing in the top eight of the Betway Premiership for the 2024/25 season.
According to a reliable source close to the club, September—who is also a former central defender—will not be leading the side into the new campaign. Chippa United ended the season in 11th place after 28 matches, securing eight wins, seven draws, and suffering 13 defeats, finishing with 31 points.

“Yes, it’s true that coach Thabo September is gone, but the club will release a statement today or very soon,” the source confirmed. “They want to be the ones to officially announce the news. Chippa United will be looking for a new coach next season, but I’m not sure if that coach will bring in his own technical staff.”
Chippa United’s management had made it clear at the start of the season that securing a top-eight finish was a non-negotiable target. With that benchmark missed, pressure quickly mounted on the technical team, leading to this expected decision.

The Gqeberha-based outfit had shown flashes of promise during the campaign but ultimately lacked the consistency needed to compete among the league’s top-performing clubs. Their inability to turn key fixtures into points left them adrift of the top half of the table, and the decision to part ways with September was seen as inevitable.
As for September’s future, it remains uncertain. Media reports suggest he declined an offer to coach the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side, indicating he may be eyeing a different opportunity—possibly at another PSL club or in a more senior technical role.
Chippa United are now expected to begin the search for a new head coach immediately as they prepare for a rebuild ahead of the 2025/26 season. The club will be hoping to attract a leader capable of stabilising performances, inspiring a push toward the top half of the table, and reshaping a squad that showed defensive vulnerabilities and attacking inconsistencies throughout the recently concluded campaign.
