Dan Malesela Shares Insights Ahead of Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns Clash

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns captain Dan Malesela has offered his predictions ahead of Saturday’s Betway Premiership showdown between the two giants of South African football. Pirates currently sit third on the league table with 18 points from eight games, while Sundowns lead with 21 points, having played two more matches. Both teams have displayed strong form this season, making the fixture highly anticipated. The match at Loftus Versfeld is expected to test the depth and tactical approach of both sides.

Malesela admitted that predicting a winner is challenging given the quality of both squads. “It’s a very tough one to call. Both clubs have performed well. However, it’s unfortunate that Pirates were eliminated from the competition,” he said. He emphasized that key individual performances could influence the outcome. Players like Oswin Appollis could shine if given the right support from teammates during the game.

The former TS Galaxy coach also shared concerns about Pirates’ midfielder Sipho Mbule. He suggested that Mbule focus more on attacking responsibilities rather than being overburdened with defensive duties. “I feel that Pirates should have players who can support him defensively. Even though modern football requires everyone to contribute defensively, if he can minimize his defensive duties, we will see his true talent shine through,” Malesela explained. He believes the team could unlock more attacking potential if Mbule’s role is optimized.

Regarding Sundowns, Malesela questioned the decision to use Peter Shalulile as a substitute rather than a starter. He pointed out that Sundowns have thrived in the past when playing both Shalulile and Iqraam Rayners together. “Sundowns have an abundance of quality players. I do question the decision to bring Shalulile on as a substitute. In my opinion, he should start to help regain his confidence and scoring ability. I wonder why that approach changed,” Malesela added. The decision could influence the balance and effectiveness of Sundowns’ attack.

Malesela also predicted that the match could go either way depending on defensive discipline and attacking execution. He noted that both teams have occasionally struggled defensively this season. “This could turn into a high-scoring game if one team isn’t careful, or it may be a tightly contested match. Both teams haven’t been as defensively solid as they could be,” he said. Fans can expect an exciting encounter filled with tactical battles and key individual moments.

Kick-off for the match is set for 15:30 on Saturday, with supporters eagerly awaiting the outcome. Both teams will look to assert dominance in the league and boost confidence for the remainder of the season. The clash represents a key test of squad depth, strategy, and resilience for both Pirates and Sundowns. It also provides a stage for standout performers to make a mark on one of South Africa’s biggest football rivalries.
