Daniel Akpeyi Set to Depart Marumo Gallants Amid Injury Struggles
Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi’s time at Marumo Gallants seems to be drawing to a close, with reports suggesting that the veteran shot-stopper is set to depart the club. Akpeyi, who joined Gallants at the start of the season after the club acquired Moroka Swallows’ status, has had little to cheer about in the New Year.
At 38 years old, Akpeyi has only made three appearances for Gallants this season, all of which came in the opening three league matches. His first outing saw him come on as a substitute for Washington Arubi during a clash against Kaizer Chiefs, before starting and finishing a loss to Golden Arrows. However, his campaign took a downturn when he was forced out injured following a difficult outing against Mamelodi Sundowns, where he conceded three goals.
Since that September match, Akpeyi has not featured again, and his only involvement has been limited to sitting on the bench once. Gallants, who are struggling this season and have conceded the most goals in the league, seem to have lost faith in the Nigerian goalkeeper.
Sources suggest that Akpeyi is set to be released, signaling a possible end to his time in South African football. The experienced keeper, who has previously played for Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs, now faces an uncertain future.
In the meantime, Gallants have been making moves to strengthen their squad. The club already has another foreign goalkeeper training with the team and has brought back Ivorian striker Sede Junior Dion. In addition, two more foreign players—a striker and a defender—are being assessed, with Namibian midfielder Rewaldo Prins also set to leave on loan to make room for new arrivals.
As the transfer window remains open, Akpeyi’s exit appears imminent, marking the end of what has been a challenging season for the Nigerian international.
