David Notoane Proud of Team After U23’s Bow Out of Olympics! South Africa’s Olympic dreams have come to a stop only 4 days into the competition.

France defeated South Africa’s u/23 side 4-3 at the Saitama Stadium yesterday. This means that the national team have lost their opening two games, bringing their tournament to an end.

South Africa took the lead on three occasions yesterday. The French responded three times courtesy of veteran striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

The striker then assisted fellow veteran Teji Savanier who scored the winner in stoppage time. South Africa now sit on 0 points after their opening two games.

“We have to be honest with ourselves, go to the last match and play for our pride,” Notoane told the media in a press conference after the match.

“We are here to try to get to the next round but also display a kind of football that SA players are capable of and market themselves on a global stage.

“We will go home with our heads held high with a win against Mexico.

“I think at the end it was the game of margins of errors. We made more mistakes in our defensive actions than France,” he added.

“They scored four, we scored three. But I’m proud of the boys for the efforts, the commitment and the quality of football that we are capable of.

“We came with attacking intent and we gave attacking intentions, as you saw. Sad as it is, the last one against Mexico is going to be difficult, but that’s football.

“What more can we say.”
