Denis Onyango Sets Sights on CAF Champions League Glory with Sundowns

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has made it clear that Mamelodi Sundowns are aiming high in this season’s CAF Champions League. Turning 41 in May, Onyango brings experience and determination as one of only two players remaining from Sundowns’ 2016 winning squad.
The Champions League holds special significance for Onyango. He recalls the pride of winning with Sundowns and sees a major opportunity to add another star to the club badge. “The boys know what to do,” he says, reflecting confidence in the squad’s abilities.
Onyango notes that Sundowns have come close in recent seasons, falling short in quarterfinals, semifinals, and even the final. He believes this season offers a real chance to succeed. “We have moved closer. African football is very difficult, and you can never know who is stronger. The mentality must always be to keep winning and try to get results at home,” he explains.
The goalkeeper emphasizes the importance of home form. Winning home games is crucial in the Champions League, where 10 to 11 points can secure progression to the knockout stages. “It is still a long way to go, but the most important thing is to win our home games. The boys know that,” Onyango adds.
Sundowns’ next challenge comes against Sudanese giants Al Hilal. Onyango recognizes the threat posed by their strong squad, many of whom featured at the AFCON. Yet he remains confident in Sundowns’ ability to secure a result at home. “The task ahead is important and very difficult, but we know what to do at home. We just need to win and make sure the team goes to the knockout stages,” he says.
For Onyango, the goal is clear: fight for the badge and earn another star for Sundowns. With his leadership and experience guiding a talented squad, Sundowns are determined to make history in African football once again.
