Desiree Ellis Names Banyana Banyana Preliminary Squad For AWCON

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has announced her preliminary 33-member squad to start preparing for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Morocco in July.

The players will report for camp on Friday next week ( 10 June 2022) in Johannesburg. Ellis, whose side lost to Nigeria on penalties in the last AWCON tournament held in Ghana, will announce her final squad before the team departs for the tournament on 21 June.

Banyana Banyana are in Group C with Nigeria, Botswana and Burundi. The South Africans play their opening match against Nigeria’s Super Falcons on July 4 in Rabat. The last time South Africa met Nigeria was when they came out victorious with 4-2 to lift Aisha Buhari Cup.

Banyana qualified for this prestigious tournament after they got the better of Algeria with a 3-1 aggregate scoreline. Ellis’ ladies won 2-0 at home in a match that was played at Orlando Stadium. They went on to draw 1-1 in the second leg.

Banyana’s latest match saw them going down to Netherlands with 5-1 away from home. Although it was a terrific defeat but they played the match to learn while preparing for the upcoming AWCON.
