Dr Patrice Motsepe Apologises to Family of Deceased Individuals After Stadium Catastrophe! The CAF President paid his respect to those that lost their lives.
The match against Cameroon and Comoros at Olembe Stadium saw eight supporters pass away. Dr Patrice Motsepe has since paid his condolences to the bereaved families.
Tragedy struck outside the Olembe stadium when a stampede occurred during an AFCON last 16 knockout round match between Cameroon and Comoros. Excited fans attempted to enter the stadium despite capacity being reached.
As a result of Covid-19, all stadia only accommodate 80% of supporters. However, fans wanted to breach this 80% and support their home nation of Cameroon.
“We are saddened when there is loss of life and all of us should put aside the legal issues and take responsibility.” He told the media.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends. The CAF family is deeply hurt.
“We would like to convey our deepest condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the people who lost their lives yesterday.
“We have a duty to find out exactly what happened and more importantly to put in appropriate measures to ensure that what happened never happens again.
“When people lose their lives, we all should be angry. We have to demand explanations and guarantees that it will never happen again.” He spoke.
