Drogba vs. Henry: Tweeps argue over who was better on Thursday morning, tweeps suddenly engaged in long battles over social media, arguing over who was the better striker. Both Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba had immaculate EPL careers as astute goal scorers for their respective London clubs
Thierry Henry joined London club Arsenal from Juventus in 1999 when he was signed by French compatriot Arsene Wenger. He joined as a left winger, but Wenger saw him more as a central striker for Arsenal and France. Henry went on to score over 200 goals for Arsenal, winning individual and team accolades. He is Arsenal’s all-time leading goal scorer with 228 goals, overtaking Ian Wright. The Frenchman won an avalanche of personal awards, while breaking records at Arsenal as well.
He was a crucial player in Arsenal’s Invincible season of 2003/2004 winning the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Players’ Player of the Year in the process. He also finished in second place at the FIFA World Best Player ceremony in the same year. Henry is widely seen as one of the best strikers to have ever played the game.
Thierry Henry has a total of 411 career goals. 2 Premier League titles, 2 La Liga titles, a UEFA Champions League title, a European Championship and a FIFA World Cup, amongst a host of individual titles.
Didier Drogba joined Chelsea in 2004 from Marseille for a 24 million pound fee. Jose Mourinho was highly vilified for paying so much money for an unproven striker in the Premier League. Drogba ousted his naysayers and became a cult hero for Chelsea.
With the like of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech, Drogba was part of the team that won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. This ended Chelsea’s 50 year wait for the English League.
The Ivorian won a further 2 titles in 2009/2010 under Carlo Ancelotti and 2014/2015 when he was brought back to the club by Jose Mourinho. In 2012 UEFA Champions League Final against big favourites Bayern Munich, Didier Drogba was the hero as he scored Chelsea’s equaliser before scoring the winning title. This secured Chelsea’s maiden European triumph.
Drogba has a career total of 362 goals. He’s also amassed 4 Premier League titles, 4 F.A Cups, 3 League Cups and a UEFA Champions League. 164 of Drogba’s goals have come in Chelsea colours. The Ivorian legend has also won a great amount of individual honours.
Comparing Drogba and Henry is quite risky, given that they’re two great strikers and great pals as well. Statistically, Henry is the better player, but the case that Drogba enthusiasts bring to the table is a solid one.
