Elias Mokwana Returns to Bafana Bafana, Agent Confirms Readiness

Elias Mokwana has been recalled to the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a lengthy absence, with his agent Pontsho Madumo of Cream Sports Management commenting on the winger’s readiness. Mokwana missed several international fixtures during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after moving from Tunisian side Espérance to Saudi Arabian club Al Hazem in August. His transition to the Saudi Pro League had raised questions about his place in Hugo Broos’ squad, as other players like Mohau Nkota stepped up during his absence.

Mokwana’s inclusion in Broos’ final AFCON squad came as a surprise to some, given that he last played for Bafana in November 2024. Madumo explained that the gap was necessary for Mokwana to adjust to a new league and settle into life in Saudi Arabia. “We are very happy and he has been working very hard since moving from Esperance on loan,” he said. Madumo highlighted the role of Al Hazem coach Jalel Kadri in helping Mokwana adapt, even using him in a striker role at times, which has enhanced his versatility.

The agent stressed that Mokwana’s return strengthens Bafana Bafana’s attacking options. He noted that the player’s focus remained on performing well at club level while maintaining his qualities for international duty. Madumo also suggested that Broos allowed Mokwana time to settle and observe how he adapted to his new environment before reintegrating him into the national team.

Mokwana will be aiming to make an immediate impact in Bafana’s AFCON opener against Angola on Monday. His recent performances in Saudi Arabia, combined with his experience on the international stage, position him as a key figure in Hugo Broos’ plans. Fans will be watching closely to see if Mokwana can help provide the creativity and firepower Bafana need to advance from a challenging Group B.
