Ethan Brooks’ AmaZulu Exit Explained as Contract Talks Hit a Stalemate

Ethan Brooks’ departure from AmaZulu FC has been clarified, following recent reports that listed him among the players set to leave the Durban-based club. The decision came as a surprise to many, especially considering Brooks’ regular presence in the team over the past three seasons.

Brooks featured in 25 matches across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign, continuing the consistency that saw him make a total of 83 appearances since joining Usuthu. Regardless of coaching changes at the club, the 23-year-old midfielder remained a trusted figure in the squad.

As his contract edges towards its official end in a few days, there had been ongoing discussions about a possible extension. However, Basia Michaels, owner of QT Sports and Brooks’ representative, has revealed that negotiations failed to yield an agreement suitable for both parties.

“The thing with Ethan is that AmaZulu did not release him,” Michaels explained. “We just couldn’t find a balance contractually in what they offered and what we wanted.”

Michaels emphasized that Brooks held no bitterness towards the club and cherished his time with the KwaZulu-Natal side. “Ethan loves the club and he appreciated his time in Durban. It was lovely for him to be in that environment, but we were at a point where we couldn’t find each other. We had an impasse, and that’s also okay in life. Sometimes it’s okay to walk away knowing that we tried to create the balance but it just didn’t work out.”

Looking ahead, Michaels remains confident about the midfielder’s next chapter. “I do believe I can get Ethan what he is looking for. He’s a brilliant footballer, no doubt. I have the faith that we can get this done.”

While Brooks prepares for new opportunities, AmaZulu have moved quickly to secure other key players. The club has extended the contract of experienced defender Taariq Fielies, and midfielders like Bongani Zungu, Pule Ekstein, and Ben Motshwari are expected to stay on beyond June.

Usuthu management has also promised further updates on incoming transfers as they continue to rebuild for the new season.
