FIFA Sanctions SAFA for Fielding Ineligible Player in World Cup 2026 Qualifier

FIFA has issued sanctions against the South African Football Association (SAFA) after it was confirmed that the national team fielded an ineligible player during the March 21 FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary match against Lesotho. The decision follows a six-month review process by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee regarding Teboho Mokoena’s eligibility.
According to the official FIFA statement, Mokoena’s participation in the match violated article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which governs the fielding of ineligible players, as well as article 14 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations. These breaches prompted the committee to take disciplinary action against both the association and the player.
As a consequence, FIFA has declared the match forfeited by South Africa, awarding a 3-0 victory to Lesotho. This decision directly affects South Africa’s standing in the World Cup 2026 preliminary competition and may have implications for their progression in the tournament.
In addition to the match forfeit, SAFA has been ordered to pay a fine of CHF10,000 to FIFA. Teboho Mokoena, while not banned, has been issued an official warning regarding his participation. FIFA emphasized that the ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of compliance with eligibility rules in international competitions.
SAFA now faces the challenge of ensuring stricter verification processes for player eligibility in future fixtures. The decision also highlights FIFA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of World Cup qualification matches and enforcing disciplinary codes consistently across all member associations.
