Three South African Clubs Nominated for CAF Club of the Year Award

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that three Betway Premiership sides are in the running for the CAF Club of the Year award. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Stellenbosch FC were all nominated for their performances over the previous calendar year.

Sundowns secured their eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title in the 2024/25 season, reaffirming their status as South Africa’s leading club. The team also reached the CAF Champions League final, narrowly losing to Egyptian side Pyramids FC, who are also nominees for the award.

Orlando Pirates enjoyed a strong year as well, winning their fourth straight MTN8 trophy and reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals, only to be eliminated by Pyramids. Their consistent domestic and continental performances earned them recognition from CAF alongside Sundowns.

Stellenbosch FC continued their rise under coach Steve Barker, finishing third in the Betway Premiership and reaching the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. Despite losing the MTN8 final, the club’s progress in continental competition highlighted their growth and ambition.

The three South African nominees will compete with CAF Champions League winners Pyramids FC, CAF Confederation Cup champions RSB Berkane, and Congolese side Simba SC, formerly coached by Fadlu Davids.

CAF also acknowledged national team achievements, with Bafana Bafana earning a nomination for Men’s National Team of the Year following their notable rise under coach Hugo Broos.

The announcement underscores the strength of South African football, with multiple clubs consistently performing at high levels both domestically and on the continent.
