Former Orlando Pirates Defender Lucas Thwala Comments on Bucs’ Title Prospects After Polokwane Win

Former Orlando Pirates defender and 2010 FIFA World Cup participant Lucas Thwala has weighed in on the club’s Betway Premiership title ambitions following their narrow 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
Despite missing multiple scoring opportunities, Pirates maintained their winning streak and remain third on the log, just three points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with the added advantage of two games in hand.
“The Buccaneers are getting closer,” Thwala told KickOff.com. “If they can capitalise on the two-game advantage they have over Sundowns, they will be in the driver’s seat. They shouldn’t lose points unnecessarily. There should be no room for losses.”
Thwala emphasised the importance of approaching all remaining first-round fixtures with a winning mentality. “All their remaining games in the first round should be approached with the intention to win or, at the very least, secure a draw. Once you start losing games in the first round, it becomes challenging in the second round when everyone is fighting for survival,” he said.
The former left-back also highlighted the changing dynamics in the second round of the season. Teams will be more cautious, often settling for draws, making early point accumulation critical for title contenders. “They must take advantage of their current lead while the Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, is still likely to drop points. We all know that Sundowns will be formidable in the second round. It’s critical for Pirates to start accumulating enough points now,” Thwala added.
Orlando Pirates’ next challenge comes in the CAF Champions League. They host Saint-Eloi Lupopo in the second leg of the second preliminary round at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. The Buccaneers face the daunting task of overturning a 3-0 deficit to secure progression to the group stage for a second consecutive season.
Thwala’s insights underline the delicate balance Pirates must maintain between domestic ambitions and continental challenges. Capitalising on their games in hand and maintaining consistency could put them in a strong position to compete for the Betway Premiership title, while also seeking redemption in the CAF Champions League.
