French Ligue 1 Club Eyes Mamelodi Sundowns Star Teboho Mokoena

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena is reportedly attracting fresh interest from Europe, with a French Ligue 1 club now said to be closely monitoring his situation, despite the player recently committing to a long-term deal with Masandawana.

The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana star, who has been one of the standout performers for the Tshwane giants, could be headed for a new challenge abroad at the end of the current season if the growing interest materializes into a firm offer.

According to sources close to the situation, the competition for Mokoena’s signature is intensifying, with European clubs—particularly from France—now stepping up their pursuit.

“It will be hard to keep Tebza for a long time. There is interest in him almost every week or month, and it’s becoming overwhelming for the club now. The latest is from France. I can’t say exactly which club it is at the moment, but the enquiry has been there,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

Sundowns, fully aware of Mokoena’s rising stock, moved swiftly in August last year to secure the midfielder’s services until at least 2028, with an additional one-year option. This has positioned the club strongly should any transfer negotiations begin, as they are in no rush to sell and will only consider a move if the offer is substantial.

“At the moment we can say he is not for sale unless the money is good,” another insider explained. “They value him so much and they would want to keep him longer. If they are to sell him, it won’t be cheap—but because the interest is from Europe, and France in particular, it could then happen as long as the money is good.”

Mokoena, who had a slow start to the 2024/25 season under then-coach Manqoba Mngqithi, has since flourished under new head coach Miguel Cardoso. His performances in the Betway Premiership and continental competitions have reaffirmed his status as one of the best midfielders in South African football.

In addition to his technical quality and composure on the ball, Mokoena has contributed goals and consistent performances, helping Sundowns maintain their dominance in local football while also pushing for continental success.

As the season nears its conclusion, all eyes will now be on Mokoena’s next move—whether he stays to lead Sundowns into another campaign or finally makes the leap to Europe in what could be a career-defining transfer.
