Thulani Hlatshwayo left Orlando Pirates for SuperSport United at the beginning of the season. His head coach Gavin Hunt insists he deserves to be within the national team ranks.
When Tyson joined The Buccaneers from the now defunct Bidvest Wits in 2020, there was a lot of fanfare after this signing. This was because of his pedigree as Bafana Bafana captain, and captain of Wits as they won the ABSA Premiership in 2017.
However, his first season with the Soweto giants was littered with personal errors which saw him dropped from the squad by Josef Zinnbauer. Last season, he barely featured under the dual mentorship of Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids.
He joined his former Wits coach Gavin Hunt as SuperSport, where he has regained the form which led to him being captain of the national team.
“Tyson should still be captain of Bafana and I don’t care what anybody says,” Hunt told the media.
“He is 32 years old and is not even in his prime as a centre back. He had a rough patch, and you can’t just be throwing away a player like that, no chance.
“Not for me,” he confirmed.
Hugo Broos was initially against having older players in the national team, be he recalled Themba Zwane in the last international break. Thabang Monare, 32, was also called up for friendlies against Guinea and France.
This could open the door for other players over 30 years of age. Gavin Hunt Believes Thulani Hlatshwayo Should Still Be Bafana Bafana Captain!
