Gavin Hunt Wants SuperSport United to Play in Africa! The head coach has big aspirations for Matsatsantsa.
Gavin Hunt was reassigned as the SuperSport United head coach at the beginning of the season. He has set himself the target of qualifying for CAF competition at the end of the campaign.
Under Kaitano Tembo, Matsatsantsa found themselves struggling to qualify for the top 8. This season, Hunt says that top 8 should be a formality and that a club like SuperSport should be competing with other clubs from the continent.
They were defeated by Dondol Stars in the Nedbank Cup last week, so their only passage to Africa football is by finishing in the top 2.
“I think it’s important we go play into Africa; the top eight we shouldn’t be concerned about that.” He told the club media.
“We just don’t want to be in the top eight, we certainly need the club to play into Africa. We still have a lot of games left and obviously we need to get lucky with injuries.
“We have been very unlucky losing two centre-backs, it’s a big blow to us.” Hunt added.
The tactician has also bemoaned the injury situation at the club right now. In the loss to Dondol Stars, veteran striker Thamsanqa Gabuza had to deputise as a centre back.
“We are really struggling to put the back-four together. Luke Fleurs is injured.
“We have all three centre-backs being out, we can’t be losing Tyson [Thulani Hlatshwayo] and TT [Thatayaone Ditlhokwe], we need cover. The absence of Tyson is a huge blow to us, he had a big concussion and concussions are always dangerous especially when you are playing in that area of the pitch heading the ball, so we are going to have to look and see what’s the story.” The coach spoke.
