George Matlou Leaves Kaizer Chiefs Future in God’s Hands as Contract Nears Expiry

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou is keeping calm and grounded as the end of his current contract approaches, choosing to focus on his game and leave the future in divine hands.
The 26-year-old, who joined the Glamour Boys at the beginning of the 2022/23 season alongside Dillan Solomons and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, has seen his time at Naturena plagued by injuries that have hindered his progress. Once tipped as one of South Africa’s most promising creative midfielders, Matlou has struggled to establish himself fully due to recurring fitness issues.
His original two-year deal was extended by a year last season, but that contract now runs out at the end of June. Despite the uncertainty around his future, the Soweto-born star remains unfazed and committed to finishing the season strongly.
“Yes, my contract is coming to an end this coming June,” Matlou said. “But I am going to leave that to God… I will give everything to God.”
Matlou’s faith remains his anchor, and rather than speculate or worry about negotiations, the former Moroka Swallows man insists he is solely focused on helping Chiefs wrap up the season on a high note.
“My focus now is to win Saturday’s game to get into the Top Eight. As a player, I’m only focusing on the game,” he added. “What will happen next [with regards to my contract] is for the club and the agent, so I will hear from the agent.”
After returning to action in January following another spell on the sidelines, Matlou has made just 15 appearances across all competitions this season, including the Nedbank Cup final win over Orlando Pirates on May 10. However, he was an unused substitute during the recent Soweto Derby defeat in the league.
When fit, Matlou has shown flashes of the creativity and flair that once made him one of the most sought-after players in the country. But Amakhosi are now faced with a crucial decision — whether to extend the contract of a player with clear talent but persistent injury setbacks, or to explore alternative options in their midfield rebuild.
For Matlou, however, the priority remains clear: “I’m one player who does not talk to the agent while the season is on. If I’m going to start thinking about contracts and stuff, I’m going to lose concentration for the game.”
Chiefs conclude their DStv Premiership campaign against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15:00), with a Top Eight finish still on the line — and possibly, Matlou’s final say in the gold and black jersey.
