Golden Arrows Coach Explains Why Orlando Pirates Are Fascinating This Season

Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has shared why Orlando Pirates have become one of the most intriguing teams to watch this season. His assessment comes after Pirates continued their strong run by lifting another trophy, even in an exhibition setting.
Pirates added a third piece of silverware to their 2025 to 2026 campaign after beating the Carling All-Stars 2 0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the Carling Cup. The match saw goals from Sfiso Luthuli and Boitumelo Radiopane, two players who have had limited minutes so far this season. Their contributions underlined a growing trend within the squad.
One of Pirates’ defining strengths this season has been their ability to score goals from multiple sources. They are not dependent on one talisman. Tshepang Moremi currently leads the team in goals and assists, with fellow new signing Osswin Appollis close behind. Players across the squad continue to chip in when called upon.
Mngqithi believes this depth and efficiency make Pirates dangerous. He described the team as fascinating because of how clinical they are. According to him, Pirates may not always dominate games with chance creation, but they punish mistakes better than they have in previous seasons. Opponents who switch off even briefly often pay the price.
He pointed out that in the past, Pirates sometimes failed to convert similar situations. This season, the difference lies in sharper decision making and improved execution in the final third. The arrival of players like Moremi and Appollis has refined their attacking play and improved their composure in key moments.
Mngqithi also highlighted the work rate and balance in the team. He praised Yanela Mbuthuma for his aerial strength and defensive contribution from the front. His pressing helps set the tone and forces errors higher up the pitch. This allows Pirates to play effectively in transition, an area where they have excelled.
At the same time, Mngqithi warned that efficiency can fluctuate. If goals dry up, Pirates will need to rely more on sustained creativity and their ability to force opponents into mistakes through pressure and movement. That balance between transition play and controlled build up will be key as the season progresses.
For now, Orlando Pirates sit comfortably at the top of the log. Their blend of efficiency, squad depth and tactical discipline has made them one of the standout teams in South African football this season.
