Coming into this tournament and going into this match, many doubted the chances of Spain to go far in the tournament. This is because of their extremely youthful team.
Older players like David De Gea, Thiago Alcantara and Sergio Ramos were all left out by head coach Luis Enrique. He has opted for a largely youthful team.
This paid off as they scored their 100th goal in the history of the FIFA World Cup and managed their biggest ever win in the competition.
Goals came from Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Ferran Torres x2, Gavi, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata.
“This was a very special game for us.” Spain coach Luis Enrique told the FIFA media.
“It is usually difficult for us to start competitions, but we have done very well. It has been a very important victory.
“I had always read that there was a lack of goals in this team. But although we still don’t have a clear scoring reference, we have many players who score goals.” He spoke.
“They kept the ball throughout the match,” Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez said.
“We did the exact opposite. We didn’t have possession; we didn’t really attack.
“They played an amazing game, and we didn’t.”
