Group F 2022 FIFA World Cup Review: Belgium Survive Scare! The Red Devils began their tournament with a marginal win.

Belgium defeated Canada 1-0 in their 2022 FIFA World Cup opening group stage game yesterday. This has put them well on their way to the journey of topping their group.

Belgium 1:0 Canada – Group F

Belgium was by far the second-best team throughout the encounter last night. The Canadians dominated the game, created more chances, and even had a penalty in the match.

They were awarded a penalty in the first half, which was taken by star player Alphonso Davies. The spot kick was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

The only goal of the match came courtesy of Michy Batshuayi, scoring against the run of play.

“Was it technically the worst performance? Yes. The worst game? No, because it’s a win at the World Cup.” Roberto Martinez said to the FIFA media.

“We had to show a different side of our game and had to defend really well. You need to give huge respect to Canada’s performance.

“But we deserve the win. We have to be self-critical and improve.

“But it’s better to do it when you have three points, especially after seeing what happened (to Argentina and Germany).” He added.

“We had an opportunity to be top of the group tonight.” Canada coach John Herdman lamented.

“That was the mission and we missed it, but I’m proud of the performance. These lads put a shift in, they showed that they can live on this stage.

“They made the fans proud and made them feel like they belong here. That was important for us.

“I showed them the stats and showed them that they belong here.” He added.
