Happy Birthday Akani Simbine! The South African turned 27 on Monday. His birthday came just days after Simbine clocked 9.96 seconds to win the men’s 100 metre race in the Diamond League.
Akani Simbine has only just turned 27 years old but is already an acclaimed athlete. Simbine made marvellous strides in South African athletics when he was a student at the University of Pretoria. The speedster was studying Information Sciences.
While still a student at Tukkies, Simbine was setting South African and event records.
In 2013, he participated at the Summer Universiade and IAAF World Championships in Russia, finished ninth and seventh place with a time of 10.49 and 10.38 in the men’s 100 m respectively.

In 2014, he competed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and African Championships in Morocco while took part in a total of four events. These are 100 m (x2), 200m and 4x 100 m.
In 2015, he won his first international medals, picking up a gold medal and bronze medal in the 100 m and 4 × 100 m at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea
In 2016, he continued where he left off in 2015, winning a gold medal and bronze medal in the 100 m and 4 × 100 m at the African Championships. The same year, he made his Olympic dream at the Rio Olympics, finishing fifth place with a time of 9.94 in the 100 m
Two years in 2018, he won big, arguably his ‘BIG BREAKTHROUGH, when he won a total of five medals. Last year, he won a silver medal as part of the South African 4×200 m relay alongside Simon Magakwe, Chederick van Wyk, and Sinesipho Dambile.
Just recently, he won the 100 m with a time of 9.96 at the Wanda Diamond League in Rome.
