The match was the beginning of a new dawn for Les Blues as they fielded a very youthful side. It was their first match after Hugo Lloris, Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema all retired from international football.

Kylian Mbappé scored a brace, as he captained France for the first time. Antoine Griezmann and Dayot Upamecano also found the back of the net in the match.

“It was a very good evening. We were effective in both penalty areas – that’s football at the highest level.” Head coach Didier Deschamps told UEFA after the match.

“We now have to think about Ireland – we’ve only got three days to recover. They didn’t play tonight and will no doubt have been watching us on TV.” He added.

Kylian Mbappé wore the armband for the first time, since being made national team captain.

“It was normal, normal… I keep doing my job, helping the team, making and scoring goals, trying to make the difference and to take the others with me.

“It worked today but it’s just the start and we mustn’t get carried away. The hardest is yet to come.

“We had prepared all week with the idea of not disappointing the fans. It’s the first time we played here since the World Cup.

“We wanted to pick up where we’d left off at the World Cup – apart from the final. It’s a successful first step but there’s still everything to do in the group.” He concluded.
