Many were taken aback by the amount of changes Broos made before the match yesterday. Zakhele Lepasa, Mihlali Mayambela, Nyiko Mobbie, Sphelelo Sithole and Innocent Maela all replaced Lyle Foster, Themba Zwane, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Luke Le Roux and Aubrey Modiba.

The changes paid dividends as Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayambela scored the two goals for South Africa. William Jebor scored the only goal for the hosts, after a Ronwen Williams error.

“It was a very tough game, but we knew it. The way Liberia plays is ‘power play’, not combinations.” He told the media after the win.

“I think we put the right players in the right place today. I’m very proud the way they did it [won the match], they fought for it.

“I asked for perseverance, I saw 90 minutes of perseverance, and we scored two times. I think it was difficult, but I think we deserved it.”

Broos was asked to explain the changes for the encounter.

“We knew, like I said, its power play what they play, from behind, with the long ball and then they do well and fight for it. So, I needed guys who fight also.

“I think with [Innocent] Maela behind, with [Sphelelo] Sithole in the midfield, [Mihlali] Mayambela who’s a big guy, who has power. I thought we could do something today and we did it.”
