Innocent Maela Breaks Silence on His Future at Orlando Pirates Amid Exit Speculation

As the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season nears its conclusion, Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela has finally addressed mounting questions surrounding his future at the club — and his remarks strongly suggest that a major transition could be on the horizon.

Maela, 32, has found game time hard to come by this season, registering just 11 appearances in all competitions, with only three starts. Persistent injuries and the fierce competition at left-back from teammates Deon Hotto and Paseka Mako have kept the skipper sidelined more often than not.

Despite his struggles on the pitch, Maela remains a respected figure within the Pirates setup. His leadership and experience were instrumental during coach Jose Riveiro’s debut season, which saw the Buccaneers lift both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup trophies. He was also part of Bafana Bafana’s broader squad picture during their successful qualification campaign for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, reports have emerged in recent weeks indicating that the Soweto giants are preparing Maela for a post-playing role at the club — a clear sign that his time as an active player may be drawing to a close.

Speaking to journalists ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby clash against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Maela gave a heartfelt response that hinted at his readiness to embrace the next chapter of his career.

“In life, just like anything else, you have to allow succession to happen because we all know you can’t play the game forever,” Maela said. “If you have an opportunity and God has placed you in a position where you can influence the next generation, then you have to take it with both hands.”

The veteran defender went on to reflect on his journey, expressing gratitude for the grace he’s found within himself to accept change, even when it’s difficult.

“It’s easy and nice to have grace when things are happening for you, but it’s very difficult to express the same grace when things are not happening,” he explained. “I truly believe I’ve had that grace within myself, and I thank God and the people who groomed me when I was young to be in this position.”

While Maela stopped short of confirming his retirement, he did suggest that official news could be imminent.

“The season is not done yet, but when the time is right, the club will give out a statement, I will give out a statement, and we will take it from there.”

His remarks have only fueled speculation that Saturday’s Soweto Derby — and possibly the Nedbank Cup final the following weekend — could mark his final appearances in the black-and-white jersey.

With Pirates missing three key defenders heading into the derby, Riveiro may be tempted to call on his captain one last time in what could be an emotional send-off in front of thousands of fans.

As Pirates look to end the season on a high, Maela’s dignified approach and willingness to embrace a mentorship role underline his lasting impact on the club — both on and off the field.
