Their UEFA Champions League clash had to be called off. Assistant Coach Pierre Webo claimed to have been racially insulted by a match official.
Istanbul Basaksehir Players Walk off The Pitch against PSG! The UEFA Champions League match fully stopped on the 14th minute.
Istanbul assistant coach and former Cameroon striker Pierre Webo was racially insulted by the fourth official.
Romanian fourth official Sebastian Coltescu was said to have used a racial slur when describing Webo. In Romanian, he referred to him as “that black guy (negro) in the green hat”.
Striker Demba Ba can be seen interrogating the match officials. He is heard on video footage saying; “Why, when you mention a black guy, do you have to say this black guy?”
In light of this, all players and coaching staff of Istanbul Basaksehir and PSG walked off the pitch in unison.
The match will resume today at 19h55. It will resume on the 14th minute, when the game stopped.
It will be adjudged by a new set of Dutch referees headed by Danny Makelie.
“UEFA is aware of an incident during tonight’s Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir and will be conducting a thorough investigation.” UEFA said in a statement.
“Racism, and discrimination in all its forms, has no place within football.” The statement concluded.
PSG also released a statement in which they condemn all forms of racism, in football and in general society.
“For more than 15 years Paris Saint-Germain has led the fight against discrimination and continues to work to eradicate it in all forms.
“The capital club is today one of the most committed sports clubs striving to end all forms of violence and discrimination.”
Kylian Mbappe, PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir all took to Twitter to show support for Pierre Webo and condemn all racist behaviour.
