Itumeleng Khune Opens Up About His Departure from Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has opened up about how he handled the decision by coach Nasreddine Nabi and the club to phase him out of the squad after the 2023-24 season. The 37-year-old, who dedicated 25 years of his life to the Soweto giants, acknowledged that the decision was challenging but accepted it with professionalism.
Chiefs’ Decision to Let Khune Go
Kaizer Chiefs announced the departure of Khune at the end of the 2023-24 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign. Despite Khune’s ambition to continue playing well into his 40s, the club cited age-related limitations and opted to prioritize rebuilding the squad with a younger, more competitive edge.
Nasreddine Nabi, brought in as head coach to revitalize the team after a disappointing 10th-place finish, brought in Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy to replace Khune. However, Chiefs offered Khune an opportunity to transition into another role at the club, preserving his legacy and influence within the Amakhosi family.
Khune’s Reaction
Speaking about the club’s decision, Khune shared his understanding of the direction Chiefs was heading.
“No, I wasn’t [upset],” Khune explained in a recent interview. “I knew the club told me the direction they were taking. I need to buy into that, I needed to support the idea the club was moving in that direction. Nothing personal, but I’m part and parcel, I’m still family to Kaizer Chiefs.”
Khune revealed he had reservations about leaving the field entirely but remained open to discussions about a potential new role.
“If I had to sign as a footballer for another team, I can’t be with Kaizer Chiefs,” he said. “But for now, I haven’t cut ties with them, they haven’t cut ties with me. We are still in talks, trying to find a good working relationship in a different position going forward.”
The Bigger Picture
Khune’s departure marked the end of an era for the club, but his acceptance of the transition showcases his deep respect for Chiefs. Meanwhile, Fiacre Ntwari, who replaced him, is yet to fully settle into his role, struggling to keep a clean sheet in his first five PSL matches.
Despite this, Khune remains optimistic about the club’s future. “The goalkeepers will rise to the occasion and inspire the team to the highest level,” he stated, showing his unwavering faith in the squad.
What’s Next for Khune?
As discussions continue regarding Khune’s potential off-field role at Kaizer Chiefs, the club’s fans will be eager to see how his vast experience and influence shape the team’s future. For now, Khune’s loyalty and commitment to Amakhosi remain unshaken, cementing his legacy as one of South Africa’s most iconic players.
