Itumeleng Khune Recalls Competing with Senzo Meyiwa in The Soweto Derby! Amakhosi clash with The Buccaneers in their next game.

Kaizer Chiefs host rivals Orlando Pirates in the DSTV Premiership tomorrow afternoon. Veteran Itumeleng Khune has revealed how he used to be in competition with Senzo Meyiwa in these encounters.

The two goalkeepers were both born in 1987 and had somewhat of a rivalry back in their day. Khune’s progression into the first team of Amakhosi was more seamless as he kept his spot ever since his debut.

Meyiwa on the other hand, had to fight Moeneeb Josephs for the Pirates number one spot. He eventually did it, and became a Bafana Bafana regular too, where he would compete with Khune for the number one position.

The late Meyiwa managed to captain both club and country.

“Any player that walks on the park has friends outside of Kaizer Chiefs and before the Derby they will talk,” Khune spoke.

“If I can take you back to the days when I was in competition with the late Senzo Meyiwa, we would meet on national duty and plan, ‘Let’s give our fans something to smile about’. But still, you know, as Kaizer Chiefs, we had to win.

“And Senzo would say the same to me.” He added.

“The Derby has always been a great platform for us goalkeepers to showcase our talent, and obviously, to win the game and have the bragging rights between us,”

Amakhosi aren’t on a great run of matches, but this hasn’t ever stopped them from winning this encounter.

“It has been a great journey for me, having participated in 27 Derbies.

“It is more important for the Club to win the Derby and for our fans to have the bragging rights. So, going into this match, in our minds we are going to win and make it five in a row.” The shot stopper added.
