Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has weighed in on recent comments made by the club’s Football Manager, Bobby Motaung, following Chiefs’ 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Friday.
Motaung’s Perspective
Motaung expressed his belief that Kaizer Chiefs are on the right track under head coach Nasreddine Nabi, suggesting that the club is making progress.
“It’s a long journey, we’re not there yet, but we are cooking it. Trust the process, it’s a journey, give it patience and time. To build it takes time, it’s not an overnight success. It’s a building process, we are there and the league is not over yet,” Motaung said in an interview with SuperSport.
Khune’s Response
While Khune holds Motaung in high regard, he respectfully disagreed with his assessment, citing the club’s inconsistency as a major concern. He pointed out that while Chiefs have shown glimpses of quality, their overall performances have lacked the consistency needed for success.
“‘Bob Steak’ is like a father to me – but I don’t agree with his statements,” Khune told the Siya Crew.
“Chiefs haven’t been convincing this season. They are playing in patches and obviously, everyone expects Kaizer Chiefs to be the most consistent team. And the fact that they win one, lose one and they draw one, they win one, that’s not consistency.”
The Need for Consistency
Khune stressed the importance of finding a formula that works for the team and sticking to it. He believes that the coaching staff and players must focus on improving the areas that have shown positive results while addressing the inconsistencies that have plagued the squad.
“There’s something that they need to go back and check. What is it that works for the team? What is it that doesn’t work for the team and continue improving on what’s been working for the team. Consistency is what is needed. That’s all I can say about Kaizer Chiefs.”
The Road Ahead for Chiefs
With seven wins, four draws, and six losses in their 17 matches this season, Kaizer Chiefs must address their inconsistency if they hope to compete at the highest level. While Motaung remains optimistic about the club’s direction, Khune’s perspective serves as a reminder that success requires sustained effort and stability on the pitch.
