Jose Riveiro Eyes Round of 16 as Al Ahly Prepare for 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Al Ahly are setting their sights on making a statement at the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, with Spanish head coach Jose Riveiro outlining a clear ambition—to advance beyond the group stages. Drawn in a formidable Group A alongside Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras, and Portuguese giants FC Porto, the Egyptian champions are bracing for a challenging campaign.
Riveiro, who took over the reins after a highly successful spell at Orlando Pirates where he clinched five domestic titles, is now tasked with leading Al Ahly on the global stage. The Spanish tactician acknowledged the magnitude of the competition but emphasized his belief in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“I am happy to be here and to represent Al Ahly, one of the greatest clubs in the history of the Club World Cup, which has participated in many previous editions of the tournament,” Riveiro said during a media briefing.
He added, “Al Ahly’s group is certainly difficult, just like the other groups, but all members of the team are eagerly awaiting the tournament in order to perform at their best. Our goal at this stage is to qualify for the round of 16 as a first step.”
The Red Devils have a rich history at the Club World Cup, having claimed third place on three separate occasions. Now, under new leadership and buoyed by a passionate global fan base, they aim to once again challenge the odds.
Riveiro stressed the importance of starting strong, particularly in their opening match against Inter Miami on Sunday, 15 June. “Winning the opening match will be crucial for us. We know there are fans waiting for us to achieve positive results, and we will work to make them happy,” he said.
While the focus remains on progressing from the group, Riveiro also acknowledged the long-term vision, hinting that success in the tournament could lay the foundation for greater continental and international dominance for Al Ahly.
After facing Inter Miami, Al Ahly will go on to meet Palmeiras and FC Porto in back-to-back high-stakes encounters. Each match presents a unique challenge, but also an opportunity for the Cairo-based club to showcase its enduring quality on football’s biggest platform.
As the countdown to kickoff continues, anticipation is growing among supporters in Egypt and beyond. With Riveiro’s tactical acumen and a talented squad at his disposal, Al Ahly will hope to deliver another memorable Club World Cup campaign—starting with a win that could set the tone for their journey in the United States.
